The Bay of Fundy pushes 160 billion tonnes of seawater in and out twice daily. This creates the highest tides on Earth, rising up to 16 meters (53 feet). To see both extremes at Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park, you must understand the tide schedule and plan your arrival.

How do Hopewell Rocks tide times work?

The water level changes continuously, with a 6 hour and 13 minute gap between peak high and peak low tide.

If low tide is at 10:00 AM, the next high tide peaks at 4:13 PM. Visitors can safely walk on the muddy ocean floor for a few hours before and after the lowest point. Once the tide rises, the trails on the ocean floor are closed due to extreme danger.

How do I read the official tide charts?

Tide tables list the exact time for the lowest and highest water levels each day.

You should download or print a copy of the official park tide tables before you arrive. Plan to be on the ocean floor near the scheduled low tide. Never venture onto the mud when the tide is actively rising.

How do I see both tides in one day?

Arrive for the morning low tide, stay for lunch, and wait for the afternoon high tide.

Start by walking down the 99 steps to the ocean floor. Spend 1 to 2 hours exploring the sea stacks. Head back up to the Interpretive Centre and eat at the High Tide Restaurant. After roughly six hours, view the flooded sea stacks from the upper metal viewing platforms.

Can I spread my visit over two days?

Yes, your admission ticket is automatically valid for two consecutive days.

This flexibility helps if the tide schedule does not match your travel plans. You can visit at high tide on Tuesday evening, and return for low tide on Wednesday morning. You will not have to pay the $18.15 CAD adult admission fee a second time.

What are the park opening hours?

Hopewell Rocks operates seasonally from mid-May to late October.

During the peak summer months of July and August, operational hours extend from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Park access outside official dates and times is strictly prohibited. Rapidly rising tides and rockfalls are extreme hazards.

How fast does the tide come in?

The tide rises rapidly, filling the bay over a six-hour period.

Always adhere to all safety instructions from interpretive staff. They clear the ocean floor well before the water reaches the main access points. Stay on designated trails and access ramps to avoid accidents.
